Beijing’s Best Makeup Artists

BEIJING, May 2, 2013 (City Weekend) — Kris at Tictac Salon studied at the London School of Fashion, and not only can he consult on styling and accessorizing, but he can jazz up a face like none other. Believing it would “be a pity” for someone to show up at a special event or her own wedding with natural-looking day makeup, his mission is to glam ladies up for their special nights.

Evening make-up starts at RMB400 and it takes about a half hour to 45 minutes for Kris to put someone’s face into hot mama mode. He says most women also get their hair done when they come in for makeup, enabling him to consult on “the total look.” Eschewing cheaper, local products for well-known brands like M.A.C., Dior and Lancome, he’s put together an arsenal of eyeshadows, fake eyelashes and all manner of rouges—he’s got it all, and it’s all top notch.

City Weekend Fashionista Fausto Leoni is a creative director in all manner of media who can hook ladies up with some of the city’s best makeup artists, as well as help them put together the best combination of outfit, hairdo, makeup and accessories. Sadly, his long-time make-up collaborator will be leaving Beijing soon. But he says that’s not going to stop the beautifying.

Bridal makeup runs from RMB2,000-3,000, which includes a trial session to experiment with a variety of looks to match her personality and dress and the make-up on her wedding day. So all the ladies can be looking good, the bride, mother of the bride and two bridesmaids get their faces done for RMB5,000-7,000. Makeup for other special events, like balls, ceremonies and corporate meetings, runs from RMB700-1,000, and of course, there are fake eyelashes.

Day makeup at Eric Paris Salon in Sanlitun starts at RMB150, and party makeup starts at RMB350. For those preferring to stay home to get gussied up, house calls range from RMB800-1,500. Quality, foreign brands on offer include M.A.C. and Chanel, and while they don’t have eyelash extensions, they can color eyelashes.

Those really looking to turn some heads could phone up Nina Griffee. While she’s looking to start offering makeup services come summer, right now she’s Beijing’s go-to gal for body and face painting. She and her team will make house calls and usually work with group bookings. For a group of four to five people, prices start at RMB1,000 for a junior or intermediate artist and at RMB1,300 for a senior artist. She’ll bring an iPad loaded with images to inspire clients, as well as work with them to coordinate their make-up and outfit, making sure it all commands attention.

All make-up artists have advised interested parties to book early, because the schedule books fill up quickly for days of balls and galas.
