Beijing’s Best Upholstery Cleaners

BEIJING, January 4, 2013 (City Weekend) — Whether you’ve got kids or pets or you’re prone to throwing keggers, odds are it’s time for your sofas, chairs and rugs to get a good scrub.

Chemdry is an international chain with outlets in both Beijing and Shanghai, and is recommended by Torana House’s RugDogBlog. For upholstery cleaning on fabric sofas, they charge RMB792 for three-seaters and RMB600 for loveseats. Prices are 50 percent more for leather furniture of the same size. Their professional cleaners can clean the furniture in one day, and the chemicals they use are safe enough that pets and kids can hang out while the cleaners work their magic. The company takes rugs away for four days (pick-up and drop-off fees are included in the price) and cleans silk and “thick, long” fabric rugs for RMB100 per sq. meter and all others for RMB72 per sq. meter.

Cherry and her team at Ouhao Cleaning and Disinfection Center can help get your rugs and upholstery looking brand-spanking new in just a few hours. For fabric sofas, they charge RMB130 per seat, and chairs can be cleaned for RMB80-100 each. She says they sometimes offer free cleaning service on small rugs that are not too difficult to clean, but larger rugs are going to cost you. A two meter by two meter polyester rug, for example, will cost about RMB130 to clean. She says their equipment may not be suitable for silk—we would recommend doing a spot test and seeing how that goes. They can also use steam to disinfect furniture and rugs after they’ve been cleaned.

Fornet, the ubiquitous dry cleaning chain, will send someone to your house to haul off your rugs, clean them and bring them back, all in about two weeks. The delivery service is free, but prices depend on the type of rug. “Normal carpets” are RMB60 per square meter, “woolen/thick normal carpets” are RMB90 per square meter and “silk carpets” are RMB120 per square meter. They can also do sofa covers (RMB60 for one seat; RMB80 for two seats; RMB100 for three seats) or the cover and the cushion (RMB120 for one seat; RMB180 for two seats; RMB280 for three seats).
